CHAPTER 29
Greg was furious by the time he drove the truck into the driveway and shut the motor off. He looked solemnly over at Tina and shook his head with disgust. She sat with her head slumped over and her hands on her lap. She hadnât said a word in a while as the alcohol was taking its adverse effects. He was thankful that sheâd stopped yelling at him and screaming out the window while they drove through Ridgefield. He had never been more humiliated and thought heâd be pulled over for suspected kidnapping with the commotion she was making.
Greg watched her closed eyes as he spoke pointedly, âThe kids are in the house. Theyâre going to be surprised enough to see you like this. They donât need to hear how much you hate me or how loud you can scream.â Her eyes opened slightly, but she kept her head down. âOkay?â Greg asked.
With an apparent effort, she lifted her head and looked at Greg blankly. âIâm not feeling so good,â she said slowly.
âI bet not,â Greg stated as he got out of his truck and came around to open her door. âLetâs get you to bed.â
Tina shoved him away meekly. âIâll sleep here. Just leave me alone!â she slurred her words with a touch of aggravation.
Greg sighed irritably while he reached in and helped her to stand. He put her arm around his shoulders and held her wrist with his left hand. His right hand was placed around her waist to guide her straight. âThe kids donât need to know what happened tonight, Tina. But weâre going to talk about this tomorrow. You can be assured of that!â he said as they neared the front porch. âWatch your step,â he stated as he led her up the three wooden steps onto the front porch.
Tina tripped over the last step and fell forward; having control of her left arm by holding her wrist over his shoulder and his other arm around her waist, he swung her momentum around and into him. She stopped pressed up against him. She hesitated a moment and touched his cheek with her free hand. âI love you, Ray. Take me, no carry me to bed.â
Gregâs chest filled with an unexpected uprising of the severest pain he had ever experienced that throbbed with every beat of his heart. It was quickly compensated by a deep fury that rose like a coat of paint over the thick wall of pain from her betrayal. Despite wanting to lash out and unleash his wrath, he bit his lip to save his words. âYou can walk,â he said bitterly.
Samuel opened the door and asked worriedly, âWhatâs wrong with Mom? Is she sick?â
âSheâs fine,â Greg answered shortly while he led her inside.
Tinaâs breathing grew heavier and more rapid. âI donâtâ¦feel good.â
âAre you sick to your stomach?â Greg asked.
Tina nodded wordlessly.
Robert stood up from the couch and began to laugh. âSheâs hammered! Oh my! Karen, Momâs wasted!â he yelled out and laughed loudly.
